The Global Cities free of Slavery project is supported by the Global Challenge Research Fund of the United Kingdom and aims to consolidate a network of researchers and local initiatives with an impact on the eradication of modern slavery, either by generating income with respect for human dignity or by raising awareness on rights.
Resulting from a partnership between the Centre for Research on Modern Slavery of the BRICS Policy Centre and the Rights Lab of the University of Nottingham, the project has already attracted the Eduardo Mondlane University in Maputo and the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, with researchers dedicated to the themes of forced marriage, domestic work, human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
The Workshop "Global Cities Free of Slavery" was held on 29 January 2020 and brought together researchers from the cities of Maputo, Bangkok and Nottingham with leaders from Morro do Alemão, Favela da Maré and Morro da Providência, labour inspectors, labour prosecutors, Secretary of Human Rights of the State of Rio de Janeiro, GPTEC – UFRJ.
I Webinar Global Cities Free of Slavery Partners Forum: a Covid impact was held on 30 July 2020 and brought together partners from the cities of Maputo, Bangkok and Nottingham in analysis on the impact of the pandemic on workers in certain sectors in their respective cities.
II Webinar Global Cities Free of Slavery Partners Forum was held on 29 October 2020 and brought together partners from the cities of Maputo, Bangkok and Nottingham to discuss the partial results of the research and seek consensus on a reorientation of activities as a result of the pandemic.
Documentary film directed by filmmaker Luiz Eduardo Lerina, made in Rio de Janeiro 2019, filmed in Cooperativa Maravilha, Morro da Providência and port area with the participation of international and national researchers, present at the I Workshop on Eradication of Slave Labour at PUC RJ.
